Generally, the dowel must be the same height or taller than the height (or width) of the canvas. \u003cbr\u003eThis rack is intended to hold canvas up to 24\" tall.  Alternatively a piece of mat board, foam board, even cardboard or some other backing can be placed behind the canvas.
